It’s Raining Sweat

Nothing screams closeness quite like someone sweating into your mouth and eyes while you ferociously grapple each other. Quite literally raining sweat on one another. Physical aspect aside, though, Jiu-Jitsu has a way of encouraging you, challenging you, sometimes forcing you to take a good, deep look within yourself. The dripping sweat, the matted hair, the crippled fingers – are just the outer shell. It is the inward examination that this physical torture brings about, the self-reflection through Jiu-Jitsu, that leads to some serious personal development and growth. Especially over time.

Challenging You to Look Within

Testing your physical and mental limits challenges your body in new ways. Pushing past your old mindset, you are faced with yourself and all of your weaknesses. The road to improvement means you must toil away until you get slowly better, painfully, over a long period of time. It’s the grind: an experience that shapes your strength, your character, your mental fortitude, your outlook on life, your worldview, and even the very way in which you will respond to every situation you are faced with in the future. You cannot help but be transformed by Jiu-Jitsu. It’s hard looking at yourself sometimes.  I mean, really looking within yourself. Sometimes you have to examine the way in which you live and how it is having an effect on your life, and take the steps required to change the path you are currently on.  That can seem daunting, maybe impossible. But Jiu-Jitsu confronts you with the potential solutions to better yourself in a variety of ways so that things you thought were impossible before are now entirely accomplishable. The more you immerse yourself in training and learning Jiu-Jitsu, you inevitably begin to have a deeper understanding of what makes you, YOU.  And that is powerful.

Compelling Friendships

The way you test your physical and mental limits within the close presence of another person can profoundly impact you. As you learn more about yourself through Jiu-Jitsu, you will also learn more about others. Your training partners, once strangers, are now friends of the deepest kind. Training Jiu-Jitsu offers a unique opportunity to create lasting adult friendships. As you connect with yourself and others on the mats, this enrichment is amplified in your daily life. Not only do these meaningful friendships bring value to your day-to-day living, but they answer your need for social interactions and create a unique network of people.

Diversity – Meeting New People

It is a very diverse group of people who make up your training partners, teammates, coaches, and professors. It is just one of the many ways that set Jiu-Jitsu apart from other sports. You could be rolling with a lawyer or the teenager who lives down your street. You could be training with the Crown Prosecutor of your city or the entrepreneur who just opened a small business downtown. From teachers to homemakers, from plumbers to engineers – Meeting and discovering new friendships with people who you would be unlikely to meet and know otherwise is an absolute delight. Different personalities offer various styles of rolling, and the variety of body types can mean different technique strengths. The mats are home to a diverse haven of knowledge, inspiration, culture, and personality, and everyone brings 

Something different to the adventure. 

As you learn more about yourself and others through learning and training Jiu-Jitsu, you become a better, elevated version of yourself. Your journey is sure to include a LOT of self-examination, critical thinking, and surprising and deep friendships.
